"But isn't salvation a one time event, when your name is written in the lambs book of life" Gregor, greetings in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. I pray that you may continue in the grace and love of God in Christ Jesus. Is "salvation a one time event"? The answer is both yes an no. In the case of Cornelius and his house it was a one time event. They received the Baptism of the Holy Spirit at the same time that they believed. For almost all other examples in the NT, it was a multiple event. People accepted Jesus and were baptized, and then they later layed hands upon them to receive the baptism of the Holy Spirit. I believe the analogy of marriage would help us understand the normal process of salvation. In marriage, man appears before a religious or civil authority where the legal aspects or marriage are completed. Once these legal aspects are completed, the authorities enter the legal and factual aspects of the marriage in the Church records and in the Clerk of Courts of office. The fact of the marriage is written in the legal books and remains as a permanent record. After the legal and ritual completion of the marriage, the husband and wife will later consummate the marriage and experience the vital or living reality of the marriage. It is in the consummation that the vital and living aspects of marriage are experiecned--the union of two of two souls in the creation of another soul. Sometimes the consummation and vital aspect occurs immediately after the legal aspect, but normally there is a period between the two. In Christian societies, almost all aspects of civil administration are patterned after the biblical models. Using this marriage analogy, I would like to look at your question "Is salvation a one time event?" Not normally. God, of course, is omnipotent and does it however He desires, but the norm in the Bible as well as in the Christian era has been a process. First, an individual receives and confesses Jesus Christ as their Lord and saviour and then their names are written the God's Book of Life. The Book of Life is the permanent records of the Clerk of Court of heaven. It is the legal and permanent record in heaven of that person's salvation Every person that has sincerely believed in, and has confessed Jesus as Lord can be assured that a permanent record has been entered in heaven that will last for all eternity. This is normally the first step and the legal aspect of salvation. It is a very important step and gurantees to the individual all the privileges and promises that go along with that legal deed. The next step, the living and vital aspects of salvation, is to begin to claim rights and privileges of the legal act. Newly weds can claim all the rights of marriage such as tax exemptions, the union of the bed, childbearing etc. etc. with the full blessing of the society of heaven-- Kingdom of God. Similarily, the new christian can now claim all the promises and privileges that come with having his name written in the Book of Life. What are the privileges, promises and rights of the new Christian. All the promises of Abraham belong to this new christian. The most important promise and privilege of this legal "new birth" is the promise and gift of the Holy Spirit to everyone that asks. WOW. That is the living and vital aspect of being a Christian. Would God give his children a serpent if they asked Him for the Holy Spirit. This is where the New Covenant in Jesus's Blood is consummated--man is recreated in the image and likeness of God and then filled with the Holy Spirit. Man and God become ONE and remain separate at the same time. Man experiences the reality of the Trinity by being in the Trinity. We are in Christ and Christ in God--we are all one in the living and vital aspects of salvation. It is the consummation of the holy marriage of our salvation in Christ. My dear brother, may Christ reveal to you the fullness of your salvtion in Him according to the sincere desires of your heart. Emile, a created son of God called to proclaim the good news of God's salvation for man.
