Alcatel to Demonstrate Easy-to-Use ADSL Modem Prototype at Comdex RICHARDSON, Texas--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 1997--Alcatel announced today a technology demonstration with Intel Corporation [Nasdaq:INTC - news] at next week's Comdex show in Las Vegas of a prototype, easy-to-use ADSL (asymmetric digital subscriber line) modem that promises to revolutionize ADSL services for home and business environments. This prototype is unique in that it simplifies installation by connecting to a personal computer's Universal Serial Bus (USB). The majority of personal computers manufactured today have USB capability. ADSL is becoming the technology of choice for several large telecommunications carriers around the world to provide high-speed Internet access, data and video services, and more. This USB configuration provides users with unprecedented installation simplicity and full support for plug-and-play. Most ADSL modems require that the user first install a network interface card before the modem can be attached. ''Increasing the bandwidth for speed and the amount of information coming to the PC is a key goal for Intel,'' said Dr. Kevin Kahn, director Communications Architecture Lab and Intel Fellow. ''High bandwidth DSL solutions, like the one demonstrated at Comdex, promise high-speed communication modems with easy-to-use USB connectors.'' The modem, which will be demonstrated in the Intel booth (N109 in the Las Vegas Convention Center) at Comdex, will interoperate with an Alcatel Digital Subscriber Line Access Multiplexer (DSLAM). Several telecommunications operators worldwide, including U.S. carriers, currently are installing Alcatel DSLAMs. This ADSL technology demonstration underscores the commitment of Alcatel and Intel to broadband connectivity for home and small business personal computers, particularly for high-speed Internet access and telecommuting.
