>Does sun really think it can get by with that dinosaur of an operating system in the 21 century? Unix should have been
retired to a museum by now.

What would you replace it with?

I had to take a shot at this one. your post seems to think that
Windows NT is a modern and better OS then UNIX is. Well, the fact
is WIN NT is just catching up with UNIX and they are not even close.

What makes an OS a modern OS?

1) Open Architecture
2) Multi-threading ( at the kernel level )
3) Support for Multiple types of File systems
3) Multi programming + multitasking
5) High availability ( Unix will not crash if I if I pop
my cdrom out while accessing it)
4) Highly scalable (UNIX works on a 64 CPU machine )
And I'm sure there is more items that can be added to this list
that UNIX already have.

Now please tell me one thing that NT has UNIX does not have!

Now one may say that NT is easier to use then UNIX. Here too
I disagree! Win NT is just more popular.

That was just MHO.

Gro--

Now I know why your name is space cadet. NT reminds me about the story about the emperor's clothes. Noone has the guts to tell the truth that NT is an immature operating system. I can tell by your comments that you have no knowledge about operatinf systems. UNIX is not a dinasaur, it is a mature robust operating system. NT is a toy compared to UNIX. Most developement is done on UNIX, while NT is good for secretaries to do word processing.
I worked with NT, tried to set up NT on a multi-processor machine, what a mistake. NT is terrible with high end servers.
Also the NT desktops that we had constatntly hung. There are many people out there that are fooled by Bill Gates. The reason why NT and windows is do popular is because it is great for home PC's. For serious development UNIX betas NT hands down, it isn't even a contest.
