I should have pointed out that (I think) my daughter was/is pulling our chain when she says we're on our own when we get old(er)... <ggg>

Also, I should point out that family heirlooms are passed down from generation to generation, and that includes not just furniture and "stuff" like coin collections, etc., but also a cottage in Northern Mich that my brother and I now own (3rd gen.) and which we will pass on to the next gen... it is where our extended family gathers each and every summer -- in fact, I've spent portions of every summer of my life there, the only place I can say I've spent time every year of my life... that cottage is worth quite a bit of money, but none of us could afford to buy something similar by ourselves despite plunging real estate prices... I also bought/own a fair amount of undeveloped land that adjoins that cottage 15 years ago and plan to pass that along, too...

So when I say "die with only $1 left" I mean in terms of liquid assets and/or stocks and such... the family gathering spot I don't even include in my calculations of net worth because we will never sell (as long as the non-resident taxes don't escalate too high, which is an issue in Mich as they triple the property taxes if not your primary residence, making cottages very hard to hang onto for some of our "neighbors" -- i.e., people with cottages in the same very rural county on Lake Mich, as well as a large inland lake).

Good pts. wrt to experiences vs. things/money... I agree... I should also mention that one other consideration about my parents making that trip is getting around on their own at their age is becoming more difficult, but they are still self-mobile, albeit on artificial knees and/or hips, and I've said I'd like to take that trip also, and could help with the logistics, etc... an experience... once in a lifetime type thing, and they are still reluctant... oh well... it's their life and they can do (or not) what they want, they've earned that right, IMO.
