When I kid around with my kids, I tell them that Yoko Ono was the devil incarnate and she broke up the Beatles (Of course it's more complicated than that). Kids being what they are, they parroted that over the holidays to a relatively young feminist type who was visiting. Yikes, what a reaction. She even went so far as to suggest that Yoko had musical talent.

Seriously though, a lot of the "visions" that came to people in those times came from eating spoiled food. In particular, the mold on rye bread contains chemicals similar to LSD. Hence, dragons, gargoyles, witches, ghouls, and "saintly" visions of all manner during the Middle Ages.
