I wouldn't call it "hoodwinked". The reality is that Bush just didn't give a damn about the politics of it.

Maybe the most important point that came through in his book is that he just didn't give a damn about politics.

He describes a meeting in which Mitch McConnell came to the Oval Office just before the '06 election and said, "Mr. President, we want you to start withdrawing troops; if you don't, we'll lose the Congress". Instead, Bush goes with the highly unpopular surge -- which resulted in winning the Iraq War.

There aren't many politicians that have balls like that.
