McCain is horrible at selling himself and the Republican party. Many of my wife's 20-something college classmates remarked that they would have voted for McCain if they had heard his concession speech BEFORE election night.

Why spare grace and leadership for after you lose? It seems to me McCain is pretty good at losing, so maybe he has more practice at that.

A useful exercise is to imagine the the type of person who would be excited to vote for a given candidate. If you can't think of anyone like that it's a good bet the candidate isn't going to win.

No one was excited to vote for McCain. Lots of people were excited to vote for Obama.
