incorporating NG as a fuel

I happened to be thinking about natural gas for vehicles today (after reading an article on recent refinery margins). Anyway, I ended up trying to understand Westport Innovations.

They do a lot of work in making natural gas engines, both spark ignited, and some funky combined diesel + 95% NG engines for heavy duty trucks. A pile of patents over the years.

Plus, they're originally from my part of the world, Vancouver.

Maybe an engineer can chime in... I do know that in the plain old carburetor days.. it was not a big deal...

I speculate the big issues with NG are

1) Distribution
2) Density

With number being the biggest hurdle.
One of my doctors bought a NG Honda for his daughters about 4 years ago:

They put about 25k on the car every year. He said by his calculations the addition cost for an NG outfitted car was paid for in about 2 years. (There's also tax benefits in California... the car is in his name...)
