Whether privately determined or externally expressed it requires an act of conscience based on some principle of right and wrong. So in this case you have a right which is, ‘it is right to support the society which is nurturing you,’ superseded by a right which is less compromise-able. Human beings are unable to function in non-belonging mode. Formulating a position which allows one to privately secede, then publicly condemn the action, requires identification with a separate or broader group definition of membership which is not alien to the victim group. It may indeed place one in the role of traitor to his local host society. On the other hand, it could also be a position that resonates with others enough to create a wave of change, in which case the others begin to identify themselves as a member of the opposition group. There is no guarantee of the latter but history is replete with examples of persons who have made such a sacrifice resulting in positive changes.
