ANTI-SMOKING BOXER JAILED FOR CIGARETTE SCAM

SMUGGLE: Former boxer warned children against deadly habit

A FORMER boxer who spoke out against children smoking has been jailed for smuggling millions of cigarettes into the country.

Desmond Southern – who fought professionally as Des Gargano – was the kingpin of a gang that trafficked 72 million cigarettes and 150lb of rolling tobacco.

His son Curtis, 25, was described as his “dedicated lieutenant”. Their racket is estimated to have cost the Government more than £11million in unpaid tax.

Southern, 48, was sent to prison for 5d years at Manchester Crown Court. He is also expected to be stripped of all his assets.

The Southerns led a seven-strong gang who were all found guilty of conspiracy to evade duty. They were brought to justice after Curtis was twice caught red-handed delivering the contraband.

On one occasion he fled the scene but left his gym membership card and his keys. He was jailed for three years. Judge Bernard Lever QC told Desmond Southern: “You are a pathetic little crook who was fighting well out of your league. Honest tobacconists who pay their taxes are being undercut by you and your son.”

Father-of-four Southern, from Chadderton, Greater Manchester was a super bantamweight once ranked eighth in the country. He fought a number of champions including Prince Naseem.

Six years ago he said: “Boxing gets knocked a lot, but around where I live you see packs of kids as young as eight smoking outside off-licences and asking adults to buy booze for them.

“But my lads are in the gym, dreaming of being Ricky Hatton or Anthony Farrell, and hopefully, staying out of trouble.” His boxing career ended in 1999 after 32 wins 87 defeats and three draws.
