So, how do we form concepts? We look for a conceptual common denominator shared by a group of existents. The common denominator can vary in magnitude from one existent to another, but while the quantity varies, the essential quality is shared.

try an example: money

money is a medium of exchange

examples of existents: gold, silver, copper coins; paper banknotes backed by gold, silver, copper; paper banknotes backed by nothing; crafted shells; letters of credit...what other kinds?

all of these vary in magnitude of their value, but can be used and have been used as a medium of exchange.

some are more effective types of money, ie, more portable, more durable, more useful in value, but all can serve as types of money.
