NEWS: nStor Extends FC Offerings

LAKE MARY, Fla.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 12, 1997--nStor Corporation, Inc., a world leader in storage technology, today extended its Fibre Channel offerings with the announcement of two new data storage enclosures, the CR8f and CR18f, based on the Fibre Channel-Arbitrated Loop (FC-AL) interconnect standard. nStor announced its initial entry into the Fibre market earlier this year with the introduction of the CR8e SCSI external RAID subsystem. The CR8e was designed to support multiple host environments using the same enclosure, including Ultra/Wide SCSI, Differential SCSI, Low-Voltage Differential SCSI (LVDS) and Fibre Channel. The CR8f and the CR18f fibre channel-based enclosures offer true hot-swapping, data transfer rates up to 200MB/second and support for up to 126 devices in a single loop (252 devices in a dual loop). Both Fibre Channel enclosures provide a level of I/O performance commensurate with the processing power found in networked and clustered server environments, making them ideal environments for multimedia, video, web, and online transaction processing applications.

"Several years ago (while designing the CR8e), nStor recognized that high-end server platforms were being implemented in clustered and disaster-tolerant configurations, and I/O performance and storage connectivity requirements would eventually strain the limits of parallel SCSI," said Steven Paulhus, director of marketing for nStor Corporation. "We saw Fibre Channel as a key technology and an ideal storage interface to facilitate the migration of enterprise-class applications to networked and clustered servers. The addition of the CR8f and CR18f Fibre Channel enclosures to nStor's product line, ensures our customers now have a complete array of storage solutions broad enough to provide network administrators with maximum bandwidth, availability, scalability and connectivity to meet their storage performance objectives, regardless of operating system platform or storage technology."

The CR8f, an eight-bay enclosure available in a tower or rack-mount configuration, supports 4GB, 9GB, or 18GB Fibre Channel drives, offering up to 144GB of high performance storage in a single enclosure. Providing maximum scalability, up to ten (10) CR8f enclosures can be housed in a 72" 40-U cabinet that houses up to 80 drives, offering up to 1.4TB of fast, secure and reliable data storage.

Designed to maximize the number of gigabytes of storage per cubic inch, nStor's CR18f is an OEM-grade, add-on, rack-based storage enclosure designed to house an unprecedented eighteen (18) disk drives in a single 4-U rack. The CR18f supports 1.6-inch 4GB, 9GB, and 18GB drives, offering up to 324GB of storage in one rack. Engineered to incrementally boost performance and availability through a modular design, up to ten (10) CR18f's can be accommodated in a single 72" enclosure, representing 3.2TB of fast, secure and reliable data storage. Other CR8f and CR18f Fibre Channel enclosures features include:

-100MB/second data transfer rates per loop (200MB/second dual

loop)

-support for up to 126 devices per loop

-dual arbitrated dual loop support for full redundancy

-support for 10,000 RPM Fibre Channel disk drives

-RAID-ready

-redundant, hot-swappable power supplies and cooling fans

-hot-swappable disk drives (supports 4GB, 9GB, or 18GB

capacities)

-hot-swappable loop resiliency circuits (LRCs)

-dual independent power source

-support for cable lengths up to 30 meters utilizing a copper

interface

-optional configurable feature card supports cable lengths up to

10 kilometers utilizing fibre optical

-AdminiStor Management Software for easy set-up, configuration

and management

The CR8f Fibre Channel enclosure is scheduled for shipment the end of February, 1998 and the CR18f enclosure is scheduled for April, 1998.
