Very sad indeed... Hope the Senate also passes late Congresswoman Giffords' bill.

On January 7, 2011, Congresswoman Giffords spoke with Bill Hemmer of Fox News about the need to address our nation's debt, beginning with a 5% pay cut for Members of Congress. If families across America must tighten their belts, she believes that Members must do the same in Congress.

A House Democrat who narrowly won re-election in November has introduced a bill to cut the pay of Congress by 5%.

On the same day the House passed a measure cutting congressional office budgets by 5%, Arizona Rep. Gabrielle Giffords filed a bill seeking to cut members' pay by the same percentage. That would amount to $8,700 for rank-and-file lawmakers. Top leaders in both parties make more, with House Speaker John Boehner earning $223,500 a year.

On Thursday, the House easily passed a 5% cut to congressional, leadership and committee budgets by a vote of 410-13. The "no" votes all came from Democrats.

Giffords said cutting office budgets is not enough. "Our salaries should not be exempt," she said in a statement. "Members of Congress must set an example and there's no better way to do that than by cutting our own salaries."

In November, Giffords defeated Republican Jesse Kelly to win her third term. Kelly mounted a strong challenge with the help of activists in the small-government Tea Party movement. Giffords' margin of victory was just slightly more than 1 percentage point.

Three other measures on congressional pay were filed yesterday, all by Republicans, which would end the automatic annual cost-of-living adjustment for lawmakers.
