A surgeon said he was "very optimistic" about the recovery of U.S. Rep. Gabrielle Giffords after the congresswoman was among 18 shot this morning at a Safeway grocery in Tucson, Ariz.

The surgeon said Giffords was shot "through and through" in the head, and that she was shot just once. He did not give details on where in the head the bullet struck.

According to property records, Loughner lives with his mother, Amy Loughner, in a north Tucson subdivision. She could not be reached for comment.

The scene around Loughner's modest ranch house was chaotic Saturday afternoon, with sheriff's deputies and FBI blocking access to the street and standing guard outside.
