Well, this is clearly selling not based on any fundamentals. It is panic selling and selling based on everything but QNTM. The slight excuse is that even high-end drives may see margin pressures, but really the driving force is the general market, asia, and other drive company problems.

Given that, I'm trying to keep my mind on the long-term although it gets hard as my profits for this year get eroded. I still have short on Amazon and will use it as my last salvo to buy QNTM if we break down any more from here. After that, I hibernate.

I have some confidence that action will be taken any time soon, particularly if we continue this pattern. Even in the worst case scenario, QNTM is worth more than this. There might be very good reason now to split off the DLT business. As QNTM shareholders, we get shares in a company which should be worth this $25 price alone given its 100% annual growth rate. That DLT business would also be relatively shielded from the turmoil of the DD industry, and the rest of the DD company would have to be priced at more than $0 :)

Stock buy back is another possibility. In any case, I'm still confident of the value of this company. I had thought it worth buying at $38. I actually bought at $31, 30 5/8, 28 7/8, and 28. The only change between then and now is margin pressures in the disk drive portion of the business, particularly the 3.2 gb arena. Somehow, I don't think those margin pressures, even if severe, warrant trimming the market cap by 40% from conservative prices.

That said, the market and fear is guiding the price now. I'm willing to wait and in the bleakest moment, when AMZN and QNTM are down, I'll cover AMZN and shift to QNTM.

Hope you longs aren't getting nailed with margin calls. That alone may be driving some of the downward movement.

-Bill

jgideon, re >What are the rest of you smiling about (or faking a smile about)?<

I'm smiling because my portfolio is again at the level of Oct 27.
But I'm less worried now. Also, it seems that once again we're
hearing how the relentless Japanese companies (Fujitsu et al)
may clobber the US DD industry. Didn't we hear that gloom-and-doom
scenario ("Japan is taking over") about 10 years ago?
The best thing to do now (unless you have cash to buy) is to turn
the computer off and check back in a few weeks.

Wish I could take my own advice.<G>
