How is the Fort Hood shooting comparable to this one? Was a politician the target? Had some Democrats been making statements that might have riled up the shooter there?

I think the two situations are very different.

Just for the record, I think that crazy people will always be around, and it's impossible to say exactly why they do what they do. I don't think Palin is to blame for this shooting, and neither is any other specific politician.

I also believe the left has a point about the way the right talks about how the government is trying to take their guns away, and so forth, and how they have to "take back" the government, as if it has been usurped somehow. Has the press overreacted? Of course they have. That's what they do.

By the way, Sarah Palin has exhibited two traits that I believe explain why people respond negatively to her. The first is ignorance, and the second is arrogant snarkiness toward those who disagree with her. Those things are annoying, particularly in combination.
