Yes, things were different and maybe better back before fewer and fewer people were institutionalized. I don't know enough to speculate. I believe it would have been easier for his parents to have committed him (at the age of 22) back then than it is now. That might be impossible now past the age of majority.

I'm eager to learn what his parents were trying to deal with as he descended into madness, well, assuming it was a descent into madness. It's not like a bell goes off and parents, friends, and teachers can now all clearly say 'this person is criminally insane.'
