They track where you've been and sell the information. IE and Firefox are coming out with Do-Not-Track feature.

They don't make money from people looking at the ads, they make money from your browser loading the ads.

And I believe SI gets ad revenue the same way, hence SI Admin's reluctance to do anything about obnoxious posters who post all day long.

SI's ad revenue goes up with the frequency of posts, so a frequent poster everyone wants to strangle is more valuable to SI from an ad revenue perspective than someone who posts occasionally.
