It's a pretty sad situation down there. My brother has a few friends in the affected areas and the reports coming out of there are not good. We can only hope that things don't get worse.

First, my opinion from observation and experience is that Australian news sources do not tend to exaggerate bad news to the extent that US based news sources do. Second, Australian publications know that their main audience is in Australia and will have personal contacts that will validate the news reports (and this news is happening in Australia.) US media assume that most of their audience will not verify the reports and they have carte blanche to freely exaggerate the truth (and they do exactly that.)
