Videogame Market to Skyrocket

November 11, 1997

Business for interactive entertainment should grow more than 110 percent by the year 2001 according to a new research report.

<Picture>A research report entitled Interactive Entertainment 1998: Sizing The Market For Games & Recreation predicts that the market for interactive entertainment could reach $11.6 million by the year 2001, a 112.9 per cent increase over 1997. Cowles/Simba Information, the company that published the findings, feel that the PC penetration rates, high consumer spending, and increased web access will fuel the growth.

The report also stated that new technologies such as DVD ROM, multiplayer gaming, and Internet television will grow rapidly and represent $3.4 billion in earnings by 2001.

"The online games and DVD ROM segments will contribute significantly to the industry's growth during the next several years as more consumers go online and DVD drives become standard on every PC," said report author Jennifer Doyle. "Online games services, in particular, will be driven by growth in advertising revenue."

Online gaming should explode from $58.8 million in 1997 to $670 million in 2001, according to the report. An increase in advertising revenue will be mostly responsible for this growth.
