It's YOU who have your history skewed, Ten. The two divisions you cite were BOTH liberal. The CONSERVATIVES of the day really DID want to remain a British colony, and there were quite a few of them!

The conservatives of the time were labeled "Loyalists":

en.wikipedia.org

Psychology of Loyalism

Larabee (1948) has identified eight characteristics of the Loyalists that made them essentially conservative. Psychologically they were older, better established, and resisted innovation. They thought resistance to the Crown—the legitimate government—was morally wrong. They were alienated when the Patriots resorted to violence, such as burning houses and tarring and feathering. They wanted to take a middle-of-the road position and were angry when forced by the Patriots to declare their opposition. They had a long-standing sentimental attachment to Britain (often with business and family links). They were procrastinators who realized that independence was bound to come some day, but wanted to postpone the moment. They were rightly cautious and afraid of anarchy or tyranny that might come from mob rule, which did cost many their property and security after the revolution. Some say they were pessimists who lacked the confidence in the future displayed by the Patriots, while others point to the memory and dreadful experience of many Scottish immigrants who had already seen or paid the price of rebellion in dispossession and clearance from their prior homeland.[3][4][5][6]

Back then being liberal didn't include free handouts and restrictions to our rights. It was more on how much power the Federal government has, and in that todays liberals are much more like Hamilton, not Jefferson (who had a change of heart when he became President).

Calif. man arrested in threats against McDermott

SEATTLE—A California man was arrested Wednesday on a charge that he made threatening, obscene phone calls to the office of U.S. Rep. Jim McDermott last month, weeks before a gunman shot Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and others in Arizona.
An FBI complaint unsealed in federal court said Charles Turner Habermann, 32, of Palm Springs, called the Seattle Democrat's office late Dec. 9 and early Dec. 10 and left two messages, each about four minutes long, after seeing him on television.

He began each with his name and phone number, and went on to threaten to kill the congressman—as well as his friends and family—over his opposition to extending tax cuts for the wealthy, according to transcripts recited in the complaint.

Habermann faces one count of threatening a federal official, which carries up to 10 years in prison.

Habermann had also previously threatened an unnamed congresswoman from California and a California assemblyman, the FBI said. The assemblyman is V. Manuel Perez, a Democrat who represents the Palm Springs area, said Perez spokeswoman Amy Wilson.

"He thinks he can steal money from people and give it away to losers and get away with it," the transcript of one call to McDermott's office reads. "I'll (expletive) hunt that guy down and I'll (expletive) get rid of him."

In the other, Habermann allegedly said, "If he ever (expletive) around with my money, ever the (expletive) again, I'll (expletive) kill him, OK."
