the sad fact is that if the world had been perceptive enough to see the 19th-century socialists as totalitarian hate-mongers in idealist clothing, the Wall would never have been built in the first place.

People still do not get it. Our President openly talks about redistribution - without dwelling on the fact that doing so involves two acts - not only giving, but also taking. There is simply no other way for the government to obtain something which it could later give (while keeping a cut). The taking tends to get done increasingly by force. The pie inevitably gets smaller - while the government gets more powerful.

Few people would argue against having a moderate - but functional - social safety net -- but when pushed too far, the redistributionist notion becomes totalitarian and... idiotic.
