There will be many trials, some federal, most State of Arizona vs Loughner.

So what does that mean? Separate trials? Separate venues for the other victims?

Yes, separate state and federal trials.

In 2005, Joseph Howard Duncan kidnapped a brother and sister from a north Idaho home and killed their brother as well as their mother and her boyfriend. He later killed the boy and the girl eventually got away. This piece of human excrement was tried first on federal kidnapping charges and was convicted and sentenced to death. Then the state got him and after conviction he was sentenced to 6 life sentences.

In all likelihood, the feds will get first crack at Loughner, then the state.

what this case calls for is some quick frontier justice and a rope over the nearest tree

We don't hand nuts anymore. Life without parole is what he should get. Permanent residence in a mental hospital is what he will get.
