They're not running around breaking into people's homes and terrorizing them on a massive scale. But the remote possibility that they could is the basis for a huge and very profitable industry. Spin works.

Most people are so far in debt they don't have any money, much less money in their homes. I remember reading about some Asian home invasions (in another city, several years ago), because some Asians keep gold in the house, but most people in America- all they've got is credit card bills... I've looked at the breakins for our town- they are clustered near the freeways and take place during daylight hours when people are at work. I could only find one robbery on our crime map for the city. And we have gangs- but they stick to high value deals, and work in the drug trade.
