I thought it was inappropriate as well, as did the Fox News panel, initially. But Obama went on to talk about each person who died, ending with Christina, the little girl. So the applause was ok in the later part.

Remember, too, this is a college campus, and they applaud everything.

I thought the university president was over the top in thanking Obama.

what really struck me was applause. Seemed inappropriate for a memorial service.
I am wondering if those of you who watched noticed or did it seem in place?

I probably heard less of the speech than you but I know what you mean. The applause in the background sounded more like an Obama pep rally..... As soon as he started speaking of 'heated discourse' in this country I tuned out, hypocrisy like that makes me nauseous...

My husband thought the kids in the audience were rude, but I reminded him it was at the UofA. At one point, I heard some girl shout out "I love you Obama." THAT was not appropriate. He's still campaigning..........even at a memorial for the fallen.

For some reason, the applause and other hoopla upset me to the point that I turned it off and watched a movie. Decided to just read the speech later.
