I've been using a cable modem since August (Adelphia Powerlink)

I can tell you once you've tried it going back to a phone modem of whatever speed is like asking a 56K user to go back to an accoustic coupler. There is simply no comparison. Cable will achieve near 100% internet access penetration in its service territories within two years. The war will be over while the xDSL crowd is still getting measured for uniforms. That is why Gates is investing in it.

I completely agree with you that bandwidth is important, but don't agree that MSFT has to invest in cable companies to push greater bandwidth. It's going to come with or without their investment, and they should stick to their core competency -- software.

I suppose you could argue that they are buying a chance to dominate the operating system of the "PC-TV" by investing in cable, but I'm not sure they need to do that in order to get where they want to go.

Frankly, as a shareholder, I'd rather they paid me a dividend than blow billions on misguided minority investments.
