Advanced Fibre Communications and 3COM Begin Field
Trials Delivering ADSL Service

PETALUMA, Calif., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- Advanced Fibre Communications(R), Inc. (Nasdaq: AFCI - news) and 3Com(R) (Nasdaq: COMS - news) announced today they have begun field trials delivering ADSL service using AFC's flagship product, the UMC 1000(R) 3rd Generation Digital Loop Carrier(TM). The 3GDLC(TM) features 6.2 Gbps bandwidth and can deliver cost-effective xDSL service over copper, fiber, coax and radio transport media.

The AFC/3Com integrated end-to-end solution using the UMC 1000 3GDLC(TM) marks the first deployment of 3Com's VIPER-DSL(TM) with any Digital Loop Carrier platform. The VIPER-DSL(R) is a multi-user modem that supports work groups on an Ethernet LAN.

The field trials are a result of the strategic alliance between AFC and 3Com announced earlier in the year at Supercomm '97. The joint development between the two companies will leverage both of their expertise in local loop access and customer premise equipment to continue to deliver integrated end-to-end xDSL solutions.

''The trials confirm AFC's commitment to providing an integrated full-service Digital Loop Carrier platform,'' says James Hoeck, vice president of advanced development, and co-founder of AFC.
''As the demand for ADSL and other high-speed data services continues to explode, the 3GDLC(TM), unrivaled in its flexibility, will continue to support the advanced services of the future simply by installing a plug-in card in the Channel Bank Assembly.''

''With VIPER-DSL routers and jointly developed UMC 1000 DSL cards, AFC customers will be able to offer high-speed ADSL service using two industry leading platforms,'' said Mark Huntzinger, 3Com's director of DSL Product Management. ''This combination gives service providers great flexibility in provisioning high-speed ADSL services, especially in remote locations, and lets end-users choose standards-based ADSL modems from 3Com, the modem leader.

Asynchronous Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) is an emerging telephony service that provides up to 8 Mbps data access, delivering 150 times the speed of today's 56 Kbps analog modems. ADSL service uses standard telephone lines, allowing telephone companies to deliver high-speed data access with little infrastructure retooling.
