"I suppose it would be nice to pay all of them less that they're getting now until unemployment hits 4% or so"

A good number of them are already getting less than the private sector. You want to shut down VA hospitals

It makes sense to me to lower public sector salaries as long as US unemployment is high. It's normal supply and demand economics. If you choose to work in the public sector, your pay should be low. We the taxpayer don't want to pay you any more than the minimum required to get decent staff. And I don't think anyone who has worked in government service for 25 years is really going to claim that they are that much better than someone else who has worked in a similar job for 5 years.

If I were in charge, most government jobs would get no pay raise after 5 years. After 5 years, you are as productive (in government) as you're gonna get.
