Hi K. Yes, the Aussie floods are Biblical in scale. I haven't heard of USA assistance. Some New Zealand Civil Defence or similar have gone to help. I have no idea what they'll actually do. Apparently there are bull sharks swimming around looking for dinner in the floods, apart from the odd crocodile and other nasty.

I was amused to see a photo of some jocular young Aussie men, posing with a muddy piano and couches. They seem to have a sense of humour about it all. While there has been some loss of life, it's not on an epic scale though individually horrifying and tragic as any loss of life is. It's similar to the Christchurch earthquake - very large and destructive but no loss of life in Christchuch though $billions in property destruction. Well-designed buildings are good to be in during disasters.

There does seem to be quite a difference between the New Orleans and these floods in the social events subsequently. I don't think the Australians have had to send in the National Guard to suppress bulk looting and what have you.

The Australians probably have enough equipment and people to do whatever needs doing. There's no medical overload. It's mostly a matter of waiting for the water to go away and then mopping up the mud. So there's probably not particular need for international assistance.
