Amylin's drug controls sugar intake by blood. Insulin (the current medication) controls sugar already in blood. However, insulin causes big variations in blood sugar levels. Amylin's will moderate this effect. Diabetes is coating of red blood cells with sugar instead of with heamoglobin. Since, Amylin controls the intake of sugar into blood, it plays a significant role in preventing sugar-coating of blood. Given the high population of baby boomers getting into 50's, Amylin has an effective strategy. They could have some implications on weight control applications as well.(which 90% of the population is guilty of!)
