"Outreach workers hit the streets in full force Thursday night, making sure the city's homeless were not falling victim to the frigid temperatures.

Volunteers with the Coalition for the Homeless served up hot food to many inside St. Bartholomew's Church in Midtown church then delivered to dozens of locations throughout the city.

"The crowds have been a little less out on the street, but there have been more here at the church because it's warm," said James Taylor of the Coalition for the Homeless.

City leaders say there are about 3,000 homeless in New York City, up nearly 700 from a year ago.

Along with food, volunteers also provided information about staying warm and off the streets.

"Well it's been cold and we've been trying to help people out. We have street sheets that we give out, we have emergency crisis brochures that we give people," Taylor said.
