I was also faxed copies of 2 letters from Scott Hansen of Mitsubishi Electronics America dated November 12. The first is to the "letters to editor" dept. The second was to the Editor in chief, requesting that a correction be published by the magazine.

The important points, as you have already quoted, are that the battery did not cause the problem and that Mitsubishi plans to incorporate solid polymer technology into its products, as further emphasized by the statement: "MITSUBISHI ELECTRONICS IS COMMITTED TO DEVELOPING LIGHTWEIGHT, POWERFUL COMPUTERS, AND SOLD POLYMER BATTERIES PLAY A KEY ROLE IN ACHIEVING THESE GOALS."

I don't believe John Spooner intended to derail anyone's technology. He apparently captured some spontaneous reactions just when things had "heated up", and found that it made a good headline.

It's unfortunate that there wasn't time, perhaps due to the issue's deadline, for the real cause of the problem to be determined.
