I've read that many of the economies in SE Asia have such strong vested interests in improving their technological standards and quality of living that these initiatives will not be easily abandoned. Is there excess capacity ? Yes. Will there be bankruptcies in Korea ? Yes. However, after this period, the entities that survive must and will be stronger and more capable of supporting growth. How long will this process take ? I don't think anyone really knows. People like Dr. Mark Mobius are in Hong Kong finding the companies that will emerge stronger than they were before. Keep in mind that our own market was tremendously overvalued and this sector was one of the most egregious offenders. I think the specter of financial problems in Asia is, to a limited extent, an expedient mechanism by which the US market can correct itself. This is a time of the year in which tech sell-offs are known to traditionally occur, only to be followed by an upswing. I'm not invested though, so I won't worry about it.
