My guess is that if you switched the early lives of Gates and Langan they both would have ended up on similar trajectories to their actual adult lives. One being very successful financially and who has left and imprint on the world. The other much less an high achiever financially.

Bill Gates succeeded because he grew up in a household that valued achievement

Almost hard to imagine parents allowing a kid to drop out of Harvard - and support him in starting his own company. Bill Gates' parents did exactly that. They must have had a great amount of faith in their son.
