But what if that neighborhood computerstore had a large base of loyal customers that had future purchasing needs and liked what they were getting at the store? And what if that same store had a slew of first time buyers (China, India) who wanted systems in the near future?

The value is much more than just inventory.

If what you claim is true, how do you account for Dell's history of success? Give me an example of what you think is a good PC? Forgive me when I say I believe your views are out of step with much of corporate America. You must have some agenda in pitching such arguments, in which case you are merely about polemics, not about well reasoned, objective views, and therefore, of little use to anyone. A lot of heat does not necessarily radiate any light.
