You dismiss the disastrous effect of self-regulation, In general, I dismiss the idea that there is anything remotely resembling a free market in the US. And that there hasn't been in 60 years. The disastrous effects that you are referring to, if you dig deep enough, can all be shown to be rooted in government regulation. So I will certainly challenge when self-regulation is presented as the cause of the problems.and the economic and environmental impact of issues such as fracking for natural gas I'd like to see the link to that one. or the Gulf oil spill. In your words, that's all "politics". Hmmm...but what does it have to do with technology? But you neglect the underlying fact that most people cannot, and do not work from home. Actually, I didn't neglect that fact at all. In fact, I gave referenceable numbers....2.5 million telecommuters and up to 40% have telecommutable jobs...which implies that 60% of jobs(most) are not telecommutable. respect your opinions, but your argument is not persuasive; the positive effect is acknowledged, but pales into insignificance against other aggregates. Your exaggeration of small (and potential) gains as indications of substantial progress is unrealistic. Many here align with your view that laissez-faire capitalism and technology will save us. We just need to sit back and let these magic forces do their work. We don't need to plan, we don't need to exercise prudence, we don't need to anticipate, we don't need to act. So say you and those aligned with you; in support you argue the transformative effect of technology and for example, working from home. For the most part, my point was missed. Obviously we disagree on politics. But the real point is, this isn't the forum to discuss the disastrous effects of laissez-faire or socialistic economic policies. The fact that we disagree on politics should not be an issue on this thread. We should be talking technology and even how current politics is affecting technology (or vice versa). I have avoided many conversations on this thread because of embedded political comments. If you want to have a political conversation, let's take it to another thread. With that, I will end any further comments.
