My painful memory of stocks I've owned that eventually went to
zero includes BNE, Bank of New England. So I think minor banks
can and will be let go. This is a fed tradition that dates back to
1929. If you short banks, avoid the really big ones.

I think the only other stock I've ridden all the way down was BRE.
A REIT that did the total dive about the same time.

Worst thing is that both were two-baggers before they
tanked. (Its the risk side of the risk/rewards of bottom fishing.)
This year I lost a chunk of change on CTYS, essentially what
I had made on AAM. Maybe I should just leave broken bank
stocks alone, or look for the hooks, and the shadow of the
boat.

And that was a great post on the price of risk/reward Defrocked!
Reminds me of the saying that the stock market is where money
that nobody wants goes to be invested.

Doesn't it gall you that the tax money of real people who have to buy kids' shoes is used to bail out stupid people and governments? And it's not for any altruistic reason, in my cynical view, but just to keep the current politicians in power. But you're right in that there is a limit -- Asia may be too big to fail, but too big to bail out. By the way, it's intesting that the rally on Globex of the last few minutes seems to have fizzled.
