Indeed, we are talking serious money to architecturally change The Matrix. But all that really means is that The Matrix is an extremely valuable country; more valuable than the temporal world humans have inhabited until the 21st century [some Buddhism and Zen aficionados notwithstanding]. Cyberspace is now worth more than any one country*.

Ten years ago, when we bought this house, the very first thing that mattered was how good the ADSL was. It was very good. We signed a sale and purchase agreement within half an hour of being shown the property. The owners liked our offer [no doubt the saleswoman did a good job of explaining why the very first offer is the best one they will get].
Unfortunately, other people discovered Cyberspace and bought beach-front property too and pretty soon our beach was so crowded that there wasn't a place to put my towel, which is how the beach at Le Lavandou got in 1987 and the sea was so coated with sunscreen in the afternoon that one didn't need to apply one's own; just take a dip in the water to cool off - I guess the water was not sterile by the afternoon either.
We need fibre down our street and I bought Vector shares [as many as I was allowed] with a view to installing it and making profits. Unfortunately, the government, having read "How to Run a Government and Stifle a Country" told Vector they were not allowed to make free market profits. So Vector said "We are not investing in New Zealand any more money".
After a few years, the government noticed that people were getting frustrated with the crowded beach and fights were breaking out. Incidentally, we went to a private beach which we called "The 20 Franker" because it cost 20 francs to enter but it was worth it as it was nicer and most people preferred free.
After investigation, the government decided they would pay $billions to Vector and others to install fibre. Bidding is underway for the jobs. So they will do a bad job for a higher price supplying places which don't justify fibre instead of leaving it to companies to install fibre where they can make lots of money.
22 years ago, our neighbour in Antwerp, a solid state physicist, had a friend in the optical fibre business [he had a factory or something]. I suggested he was onto the biggest thing ever and to get ready for the big time. It has taken quarter of a century and I still don't have fibre. Thank you Big Brother!
Back then, my job was transport fuels [with BP Oil International] and it puzzled me [at first] as to why governments and environmentalists and others didn't use dollars as the unit of measure of fuels. They used "energy balances" and now they use "carbon balances". In cyberspace, we should also use dollars because that's the unit of value.
There are umpty $trillion available to install fibre and those expensive new optical ports for 10, 40, 100 and beyond... The only requirement is to show the investors that they will be able to turn $5 into $10. If companies can do that, they will get all the money they can use.
A company can't show that in New Zealand because the government has shown they will just steal the money after the investors have invested. That's why the government is having to pay to install fibre.
Free beaches like Le Lavandou get so crowded and polluted that they are unusable. 20 francers are lovely. Buddhism and Zen are excellent, but Zenbu is better for economic activity and Cyberspace. We just need lots of backhaul to servers stashed everywhere. Hordes of people are paying 10c per megabyte to get and send data in Cyberspace

* - I haven't actually calculated the worth of Cyberspace, but if I did a boe [back of envelope] calculation, I bet it is. That has geopolitical consequences which will shock some people. Politicians of the temporal world strut the stage but they have had their day. My mother [a women's libber before it was fashionable] used to say [back in the 1960s] that you could tell when the status of something was sliding because women would be moving in. For example, bank tellers, teaching, science, and now politics. Men go onto the next big adventure, leaving women to run the house. Cyberspace is full of men, building and hacking. When a woman is elected to the USA President's job, you'll know Cyberspace is really running the show. |
