Running against Obama, big government and the bankruptcy of the country, should be easy for a competent Conservative.

Perhaps but it is always difficult to run against an incumbent POTUS. I think Obama is vulnerable but so was Harry Reid! The race will depend on who the independents end up supporting. Right now, some candidates do better than other with the independents. Palin does great with the base but does badly with independents.

After 8 years of Bush, anyone could have won as the anti-Bush.

Good point. I think that is true yet so many people want to fantasize about alternative outcomes. Romney, Huckabee, all the leading Republicans of 2008 would have lost to Obama because of exactly what you pointed out - Bush fatigue.
