The Democratic line is that there is too much "vitriol" and "rancor" in politics now. It is somehow new to politics. They say it is because of right-wing news and talk radio. The truth is they just want to shut down criticism of Dems and non-Left media, while all the vitriol spews forth from the Left. He fell for this story line that there is a new rancor in politics and that it is caused by the 24hr cable news. Dems would say only Fox news and talk radio...
