Had Reagan and Bush not played to their base............you cheapskates who don't want to pay taxes at all..............we would not have the deficts we have now. That's false (for multiple reasons, for one almost no one is arguing for no taxes at all, for another if Reagan and Bush had made different arguments we would still have deficits now, unless somehow they prevented the recession and/or prevented or slowed the growth of government), but even if it was true it would be irrelevant to the point. The deficits we have now, are largely due to spending under programs started by FDR and LBJ (and to a lesser extent under Bush and Obama).
