I rarely let aggregate numbers lead me to conclusions about anything. For investment reasons, I'm always looking at trends here and abroad and find appregate statistics pretty useless. The real picture is more nuanced. For one thing, statistical averages are always backward looking numbers. The fact that US and European companies are increasingly building plants in China suggests that measurments of western productivity don't appear to be much of a planning factor going forward.
