China's had the singular advantage of learning from the various debacles other nations experienced. For example, it decided to morph over to a market economy but not to a democracy. Thus it astutely avoided the wholesale economic collapse the Soviet Union experienced.

Also, not everyone thought Japan could ever own the world. That's not in the cards for small population, island nations. Too many natural obstacles. I do remember being surprised at how quickly Japan lost it's wage advantage and have meant to read up on that.

At the moment, China is threatened by its own demographics, not particularly its political structure. Peak people will likely be its undoing. Its efforts to pay its citizens to have more children are not panning out so far.
