I guess in a bad school you could. I don't think it would be easy to do it in our school, unless you were utterly resistant to all your teachers. There is a lot of critical thinking in our reviews of literature, and in our writing assignments (as well as in other departments). Critical thinking is actually a large part of our standards. And we even teach formal logic at the senior level- when we teach rhetoric.

"I think it's quite possible, in a lot of schools, to go all the way through high school without developing the capacity for critical thinking."
