Re: "why would anyone spend millions of dollars to hide it?" For the exact same reasons that Bush probably had his National Guard records redacted before running for President, for the exact same reasons that Kennedy puffed up his war record, that Nixon tried to keep various portions of his pre-presidential history out of the public's view, etc., etc. I expect for the exact same reasons that most politicians try to manage the narrative: To gain political advantage.
