Patrick Gaspard

Patrick Gaspard, tapped as the new executive director of the Democratic National Committee, was a lead activist for a political party that was an offshoot of a socialist group.

The party, the Working Families Party, worked closely with radical groups and is supported by the Communist Party USA.

Until now, Gaspard has served as director of President Obama's Office of Political Affairs.

Since the announcement of his move to the DNC last week, Gaspard has been taking some criticism for his work with SEIU International, a major socialist-oriented union for which he served as political director.

He has also been taking heat for his association with the controversial ACORN amid evidence he advised and worked closely with the organization's boss, Bertha Lewis.

In the July 2, 2001, issue of The Nation magazine, Lewis and Gaspard issued a joint letter describing their extensive involvement in the Working Families Party, or WFP, a small political party founded in 1998.

Gaspard signed the letter as a member of both the WFP and the SEIU.

Socialist party offshoot

Evidence shows Gaspard has been a lead activist with the WFP, which was founded and first organized by a coalition that included both ACORN and the socialist New Party.

The New Party is a controversial 1990s political party that sought to elect members to public office with the aim of moving the Democratic Party far leftward to ultimately form a new political party with a socialist agenda.

WND previously reported evidence from the New Party's own newsletter listed Obama as a member.

Also, Marxist activist Carl Davidson recalled in a WND interview that Obama participated in the New Party. Davidson affirmed that Obama's views overlapped with those of his party.

Socialist, communist involvement

The WFP, meanwhile, works closely with the Democratic Socialists of America, or DSA, a U.S. socialist group that originally founded what became the Progressive Caucus, a major so-called progressive bloc in Congress.

The DSA's own newsletters detail its close working relationship with Gaspard's Working Families Party, even calling the party "DSA affiliated."

DSA leaders have become WFP members and activists. For example, former Ithaca, N.Y., mayor and DSA activist Ben Nichols chairs the WFP in the New York State Assembly's 125th District, according to the KiWiki website. DSA member Jay Mazur is a prominent WFP activist.

A WFP delegation led a series of workshops at the 2004 convention for the DSA's youth wing, the Young Democratic Socialists.

In 2000, a DSA delegation attended the first annual convention of the Working Families Party

The Communist Party USA in 2004 called for its members to fully support the WFP and its agenda.

Gaspard's move to the DNC is being seen as a signal the Obama camp is preparing to launch the president's reelection campaign.

In his announcement of Gaspard's move to his organization, DNC Chairman Tim Kaine wrote that Gaspard "understands the importance of grassroots politics and team building. … Working together, I am confident that we can protect the progress of the past two years, achieve important electoral victories in 2011 and 2012."
