CHINA CALLS EMERGENCY MEETING
(13-Nov-1997)

Amid the economic crisis gripping Asia, China is calling for
an emergency meeting to discuss its strategy. Top Chinese leaders
will gather in Beijing next Monday to focus on the country's
financial reforms. The meeting's expected to be chaired by President
Jiang Zemin, Premier Li Peng and economic tsar Zhu Rongji.
Policy makers are likely to discuss ways to reduce risk in China's
financial system, and avoid the mistakes that led to the region's
currency and market turmoil. Chinese state bankers say one outcome
of the meeting could be the reorganisation of the central bank,
along the lines of the US Federal Reserve, to strengthen its
supervision.
