True, that addresses the benefits of "scale" as it relates to the smartphone competition, but platform share is still relevant in terms of developer reach. We'll see if Apple decides to fight for platform share or not. Certainly, they see it as an important talking point (see their recent practice of lumping all iOS devices together), but they aren't really doing anything about it. The market for $600 cell phones is already dominated by the iPhone and I imagine the growth there is pretty limited going forward. Obviously, they need to go downmarket eventually if they choose to fight for share. When will they introduce an iPhone nano?

Could be, but the smartphone industry is SO immature who knows?

And platform goes beyond smart phones, it's iPad and iPod and iTunes and really Mac with the new app store. Share in phones may not equate to share in platform.

Just thinking out loud, but it seems to be a iconic battle between an advertising/software model and a device/software/backbone model. Not sure who wins or if both win.
