GTE Internetworking Selects Nortel (Northern Telecom) Fiber Optic Equipment For Its New Global Network Infrastructure - Nortel And Cisco To Collaborate On Product Interoperability

IRVING, Texas, Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ - GTE Internetworking, a unit of GTE Corporation [NYSE:GTE - news], has selected and begun installing Nortel's (Northern Telecom's) fiber optic equipment for use in its Global Network Infrastructure, currently under construction. GTE Internetworking has signed a letter of intent to purchase more than $US 150 million of Nortel's S/DMS TransportNode OC-192 (10 gigabits per second) systems plus Nortel's Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (D-WDM) equipment to build its highly reliable network capable of carrying a wide range of high-speed data, voice and video communications. GTE's Global Network Infrastructure will link more than 100 major metropolitan cities throughout the U.S., and will be using Nortel's Integrated Network Management (INM) system to manage the fiber optic equipment.

GTE Internetworking's Global Network Infrastructure will be optimized to support the ever-growing capacity requirements of the Internet. The IP backbone will meet those needs with high-speed concatenated services up to OC-48C (2.5 gigabits per second). The network is being constructed in four-fiber rings, providing maximum network survivability, a critical factor in the transmission of bandwidth-intensive data applications. Ring configurations provide rerouting of traffic in the event of a fiber optic cable cut. Cost savings are built into the network design as Nortel can deliver the 'least cost per bit' network operation.

''This advanced network will carry primarily data, and therefore needs high capacity and extreme reliability, both of which we found with Nortel's OC-192 solution,'' said Steve Blumenthal, vice-president and general manager, Global Network Infrastructure. ''GTE Internetworking's cost-effective network will make advanced data communications more affordable for a larger segment of the market.''

Nortel will work with Cisco Systems, another GTE Internetworking strategic supplier, to ensure that Cisco 12000 Series Gigabit Switch Routers are interoperable with Nortel's SONET/SDH transport systems, providing GTE Internetworking with industry-leading capacity and quality for its customers' data traffic. This collaboration between two industry leaders would also provide a platform for the development of integrated network management tools, enabling quality of service improvements and faster deployment of IP and ATM services for GTE Internetworking's customers.

Dense Wavelength Division Multiplexing (D-WDM) on Nortel's OC-192 systems with Nortel's Multi-Wavelength Optical Repeater (MOR) Systems, enables GTE Internetworking to provide up to 160 Gbps of capacity per fiber pair to its customer-base. Nortel's OC-192 has the best Bit Error Rate (BER) performance and transmission quality in the industry (10-15 BER), which means less than one corrupt bit in every quadrillion bits.

Jim -- Thanks for the Networking Knowledge reference. I try to read as much as I can about Technology and Networking. I know my knowledege is very limited in this area. That's way I follow Silicon Investor so closely.

If I state anything incoorect, please correct me. I admire people who can be technical in their field and explain subjects to the lay person. If I can be of assistance let me know.
