Re: WDC Technical Leadership

TGW this is fantastic. I was looking for exactly someone like you, who is reasonably informed and willing to challenge my allegations and debate the issues using the tools of knowledge and reason. As you may have discovered, it's pretty bloody rare.

Thank goodness the recent brouhaha between certain unnamed persons appears to be over. That kind of BS wastes everyone's time and resources.

I do not contest WDC's recent establishment of areal density and drive component efficiency leadership. But I submit that any such leadership will be unsustainable and likely short lived. All I require of WDC is to remain competitive. This is by no means assured.

>What the reports have said is that WDC chose to hold off on MR head >PRODUCTION due to their success with the old technology DD.

This is exactly what they did. No contention here. (You meant MR -drives- not -heads- I assume.) In fact here's a quote from their 10K:
"Western Digital has taken a deliberate, planned approach for its transition to MR heads, thereby allowing it to take advantage of the hard drive industry's MR technology learning curve."

I'm in the process of preparing my evidence to support my overcapacity allegation. Stay tuned.
